The first country to recognize South Sudan after it declared independence on July 9, 2011, was Sudan itself.

Despite years of conflict, Sudan officially recognized the independence of South Sudan on the very day it became a sovereign nation. This was a significant diplomatic move, especially considering the history between the two.

Shortly afterward, other countries and international bodies, including the United States, China, and the United Nations, also recognized South Sudan.
