What is Albinism?
Albinism is a genetic condition where a person is born with little or no melanin (the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes).
Main Features:
👩🏽🦳 Very light or white skin and hair
👁️ Light-colored eyes (blue, gray, or light brown)
🔆 Sensitive to sunlight
👓 Vision problems (poor eyesight is common)
Causes:
Albinism is inherited (passed from parents to children) through genes. It is not a disease and it is not contagious.
Types:
Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) – affects skin, hair, and eyes.
Ocular Albinism (OA) – mainly affects the eyes.
Important:
People with albinism need:
*Sunscreen and protective clothing
*Regular eye checkups
*Support and protection from discrimination
