Republic

A republic is a form of government where the country is considered a public matter (from the Latin res publica), and the head of state is usually an elected official, not a monarch.

In a republic:

Leaders are elected by citizens or their representatives.

There is often a constitution or set of laws that limit government power.

Power is meant to be held by the people and their elected representatives.

Examples of republics include the United States, France, and India.
